Principal areas of expertise

  • A well qualified tropical plant pathologist, with experience of a wide range of crop diseases in many countries, including five years work in Papua New Guinea and eight years of advisory and research work travelling extensively throughout the tropics.
  • Expertise principally in tree crops (cocoa and perennial oil-seed crops), rice, banana and horticultural crops and in seed-borne diseases.
  • Particular specialization in Phytophthora diseases and diseases caused by basidiomycetes, including cultural management, screening for host resistance, epidemiology, stress predisposition, plant quarantine and chemical control.
  • Countries visited for specific work activities; Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Fiji, Ghana, Hungary, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Uganda, USA and Vietnam.

Experience

  • Present: Section Leader, Sustainable Pest Management, CABI Bioscience, Egham, UK. Responsible for initiating, developing and obtaining externally-funded research programmes. Responsibility for project leadership, scientific direction and management of multi-disciplinary research teams, including extensive liaison and collaboration with overseas counterparts and successful delivery of project outputs against agreed milestones.
  • 1985-1990: Senior Plant Pathologist, PNG Cocoa and Coconut Research Institute. Overall responsibility for the direction and implementation of the Institute pathology research programme. Main research interests: cocoa germplasm collection and screening for disease resistance, chemical and cultural control of principal diseases of cocoa (Phytophthora palmivora, Oncobasidium theobromae, Corticium salmonicolor) including comparison of novel fungicides and application techniques and economic comparison of spray application methods, also leaf spot control and viroid surveys on coconut.
