Coffee Scales

Coffee Green Scale

A range of plant sucking bug species cause problems with coffee production. Most of these originate from East and Central Africa. CABI Bioscience has assisted several countries to implement biological control of these pests though research in East Africa to explore, identify, rear and ship biological control agents to affected countries. These have been sent to several countries in the Pacific and Asia.

Dr Sean Murphy has a decade of experience of working on the control of coffee scales throughout the world, most notably in East Africa, where he has worked on the ecology and biological control of scale insect (Homoptera) pests. Dr. Murphy and Dr. Moses Kairo also have several years of experience in evaluating the effects of insecticides upon natural enemies in coffee systems in situations where pests have been induced by the injudicious use of chemicals.
